A Word from the Author

June 7, 2020 Spice Stories

“Hi, I’m Patsy Cook with another Spice for Life.”  These words have accompanied many, many stories on two local radio stations for the past eight years. They are just down-home stories that have accumulated over my 80+ years here on this earth. I use many different spices when I cook and each one has its own place in how the dish will taste. The same goes for the stories you hear and read.

I really enjoy doing the spice series. It is meant to make people stop for a moment to consider where they are in the seasons of their life and even to remember some of the times of their childhood.  At first, I couldn’t imagine how my stories and life experiences could have any effect on anyone else, but I have been pleasantly surprised at how many people respond to them.

The neatest part is being recognized by my voice at different places such as stores, restaurants or malls.  I begin talking and someone ask, “Are you that lady on the radio?”

“I don’t know,” I respond.  “How do you feel about her?”

Now, knowing for sure they cannot see me on the radio, leaves one conclusion: it’s the accent.  I’ve tried to spruce it up a bit over the years but to no avail. It is still very southern. The joke around town is I could not make an obscene phone call if I wanted to, they would know from the first word. That’s Patsy Cook.

The first time I went into the mall after we moved to Gainesville, I asked some ladies at the counter for directions, and I declare they looked over the counter to see if I was wearing shoes or a price tag hanging from a Minnie Pearl hat!  I should have told them if they visit me at home, they more than likely would catch me barefoot and happy to be, but why add fuel to the fire?  As Minnie Pearl would say, “I’m just so happy to be here!”

I do know this, no matter how I do it, I love making a difference in anyone’s life.  Being a blessing to anyone is The Spice for Life for me.
